1. Is Pullulan safe?
Yes, pullulan is recognized as safe for use in many countries’ food industries. In Aug. 2002, the United States FDA had no objections to the self-affirmed GRAS status for pullulan. The self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) notification letter sent to FDA in 2002 specified general uses of pullulan in foods as a multiple-use direct additive. (1)
In the European Union, it was approved as a food additive (E1204), and it can be used in capsules, tablets, and films under directive 2006/52/EC. Also, it is acceptable in some countries in Asia, South America, and Russia. (2)
2. Is pullulan vegan?
Yes, pullulan is vegan, as it does not contain any animal ingredients, even in the whole manufacturing process. Pullulan is produced through fermentation by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. Glucose, ammonium salts (ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, etc.), sulfate, etc., as important carbon and nitrogen sources for strain fermentation. There is not in contact with animal sources from intracellular production of the strain to excrete, to purification, drying, and making finished products.
3. Is Pullulan organic?
In the commercial industry, not all pullulan is organic, unless USDA Organic certificates it. First, you should not use genetically modified organisms of Aureobasidium pullulans.
