Chondroitin sulfate is a class of glycosaminoglycans covalently attached to proteins to form proteoglycans. Chondroitin sulfate is widely distributed in the extracellular matrix and cell surface of animal tissues, and the glycan chain consists of alternating glucuronic acid and N-acetylgalactosamine polymerized and attached to the serine residues of core proteins via a glycan-like linkage region.
Although the main chain structure of the polysaccharide is not complex, it exhibits a high degree of heterogeneity with respect to the degree of sulfation, the sulfate group, and the distribution of the two differentially oriented isomeric glyoxalates within the chain again. The fine structure of chondroitin sulfate determines the functional specificity and the interaction with a variety of protein molecules.
The main medical route of application is as a medicine for joint diseases, used in combination with glucosamine, which has pain-relieving and cartilage-regenerating properties and can improve joint problems at the root.
