Inositol, also known as cyclohexanehexanol, is widely distributed in animals and plants and is a growth factor for animals and microorganisms. It was first isolated from the heart muscle and liver. Inositol exists in nature in several cis and trans isomers, the naturally occurring isomer being cis-1,2,3,5-trans-4,6-cyclohexanehexanol.
Almost all organisms contain inositol in the free or bound state. In plants and bird, nucleated red blood cells as inositol hexaphosphate are present in the hexaphosphate ester form. Compounds with a smaller number of phosphate groups than this compound are equally distributed in plants and animals. In addition, the free state of inositol is mainly found in muscle, heart, lung, and liver, and is a component of phospholipids as phosphatidylinositol.
